CNC Machining Finishes

We offer a variety of surface finishing options to improve the look, durability, and performance of your CNC machined parts. From anodizing and powder coating to polishing and plating, our finishes provide protection against wear and corrosion while achieving your desired aesthetic.

Anodizing
Electrochemical finish for aluminum that improves hardness and corrosion resistance. Available in clear or colored options with a smooth or matte look.
As Machined Deburring
Parts are delivered straight from the CNC machine with standard tool marks. Sharp edges are removed and surfaces are lightly smoothed for functionality.
Bead / Sand Blasted
Abrasive blasting creates a uniform matte texture. Commonly used for a modern look while hiding small surface imperfections.
Black Oxide
A dark conversion coating that reduces reflectivity. Provides mild corrosion resistance and a uniform black appearance.
Nickel Plating
A metallic coating that enhances wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion protection. Leaves a bright, reflective finish.
Polishing
Surfaces are refined to reduce tool marks and create a smooth, glossy look. Perfect for parts where visual quality matters.
Powder Coating
Durable coating applied electrostatically and heat-cured. Provides excellent resistance to wear, corrosion, and impact.
E-Coating
Thin, uniform coating applied through an electrochemical process. Delivers strong corrosion protection and consistent coverage.

CNC Machining Design Guidelines

Optimize your parts for better cost, speed, and quality.

Our design team is here to help you turn your CAD model into a CNC-friendly part. Here are the key recommendations to keep in mind when designing parts for CNC machining. For more details, visit our full CNC Design Guide.

Key Design Considerations

Feature

Design Tips

Part Size

Make sure your part fits within our machine’s work envelope. 3-axis machines typically support larger parts, while multi-axis machining enables complex geometries with smaller footprints.

Feature Alignment

Design holes, cutouts, and features on the same face if possible. Multi-face machining increases setup time and cost.

Fillets (Internal Corners)

Use as large an internal radius as possible—ideally more than 1/3 of the depth. This allows the use of larger tools, which are more rigid and efficient. Avoid sharp internal corners unless necessary.

Wall Thickness

Thin walls can vibrate and warp. We recommend ≥0.8 mm for metals and ≥1.5 mm for plastics. For tall or load-bearing features, increase thickness further.

Cavity Depth

Deep cavities are harder to machine and can cause tool deflection. Keep cavity depth within 4x the width, or use multi-sided access if needed.

Holes and Threads

Design standard-size holes to match common drill sizes. Max hole depth: 10x diameter. Thread length should not exceed 3x the nominal diameter. For blind holes, add relief at the bottom.

Undercuts

If undercuts are needed, stick to standard sizes. T-slot and dovetail undercuts should follow typical angles (e.g., 45° or 60°).

Text and Marking

Raised or very small text increases cost. If engraving is needed, use recessed text with simple fonts. Alternatively, consider laser marking for part numbers or branding.

Surface Finish

Let us know if specific finishes are required. Standard milled finish is fine for functional parts; high-polish or anodized finishes are available upon request.

Design Tips at a Glance

Use standard sizes for holes and threads.
Avoid extremely deep or narrow features.
Keep walls thick and sturdy for better accuracy.
Maintain consistent radii to reduce tool changes.
Avoid unnecessary complexity—simple geometry means faster, cheaper production.
